Structured Marketing Sectors TM SMSTM (Structured Marketing Sectors) are based on established television station locations of the 3 major networks: ABC, NBC and CBS. Since a major network establishes a presence in a given city, it is a logical location to start the radius of a marketing point (latitude/longitude centroid coordinate). A SMSTM is derived by using a 50 mile radius of each centroid city of the television station's Zip Code locations. SMS's are then compiled to relate to these USPS Zip Codes. A SMSTM "marketing relevancy strength (MRSTM)" to Zip Code, is rated (distance in miles) 1 to 50. It is possible for a Zip Code to be in more than a single SMSTM . SMSTM data is a better solution for marketing analysis compared to the well known "Legacy" marketing data. This is because of the "marketing relevancy strength" data, more logical key markets and the direct relationship to USPS Zip Code Data. SMS's are updated when a Zip Code is added or deleted by USPS that is within a SMSTM. Case #1 Marketing from Zip Code 95111 - San Jose CA Legacy Data Market Area (1 match) = San Francisco CA Structured Market Sectors (4 Matches): 1. San Jose CA - Mileage from Major TV Station (6) 2. Salinas CA - Mileage from Major TV Station (44) 3. San Francisco CA - Mileage from Major TV Station (47) 4. Monterey CA Mileage from Major TV Station (48) In the above example, San Jose is clearly the closest market with the San Francisco being a distant 3rd! If you were to advertise your services locally, San Francisco might not be cost effective. Case #2 Marketing from Zip Code 21133 - Randallstown MD Legacy Data Market Area (1 Match) = Baltimore MD Structured Market Sectors (2 Matches): 1. Baltimore MD - Mileage from Major TV Station (12) 2. Washington DC - Mileage from Major TV Station (34) In the above example, Baltimore is clearly the closest market with Washington DC close behind. The "Legacy Data", does not show the complete marketing picture! Case #3 Marketing from Zip Code 00780 - Coto Laurel PR Legacy Data Market Area = NO MATCH Structured Market Sectors (1 Match):
In the above example, even remote US territories are included as long as the Zip Code is within 50 miles from a major TV station.
